Part of Quinn & Costa
First published 2021
Something is killing the animals in the mountains south of Tucson. When a college intern and environmental activist goes out to gather her own evidence, she turns up dead too. Local law enforcement drags its feet. That brings in the mobile FBI unit, and agents Quinn and Costa go undercover to get inside the town and its copper refinery. The landscape is dry and open and it keeps giving things up. A clue here, a body there. What starts as an environmental investigation pushes deeper into something far worse: greed running through the refinery, children being trafficked, and a death toll that keeps climbing. Quinn and Costa are in over their heads and they know it. The real question is not what is happening. The evidence makes that plain enough. The question is who is driving it, how deep the corruption runs, and whether Quinn and Costa can pull the thread all the way to the source before someone else dies.
