Dante begins his ascent of Mount Purgatory, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. The mountain rises in seven distinct terraces, each dedicated to purging one of the seven deadly sins. As they climb higher, Dante witnesses souls engaged in prayer and penance, their spirits actively transforming rather than suffering in permanent torment. These penitents work to cleanse themselves of pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, gluttony, and lust. Dante observes their rituals and speaks with many souls, learning how redemption operates through willing participation in purification. The journey grows more challenging as they approach the summit. At the mountain's peak lies the Garden of Eden, where a profound transition awaits. Virgil, who has faithfully guided Dante through Hell and up the mountain, must depart because his pagan soul cannot enter the divine realm ahead. Beatrice appears to replace him as guide, embodying divine love and preparing Dante for the final stage of his spiritual journey toward Heaven.
