Dante finds himself lost in a dark wood at age thirty-five, unable to reach the sunlit mountain before him. As Dante witnesses these torments, he grapples with questions of justice, mercy, and divine will. His journey through Hell represents both a literal descent into the afterlife and his own spiritual reckoning with the corruption and political chaos that destroyed his beloved Florence and sent him into exile.
