Part of FBI Thriller, book 4
First published 2000
Mac MacDougal lies in his hospital bed, healing from a terrorist bombing, when something impossible happens. He feels himself plunging toward the Pacific Ocean in a Porsche he has never seen. Three thousand miles away in Oregon, his sister Jilly has just driven off a cliff. Mac races to Portland where Jilly awakens from her four day coma. She talks with her brother for a few hours, then disappears completely. Mac begins hunting for answers in a small Oregon town where nobody tells the same story twice. An elderly resident turns up murdered, and the local sheriff pulls Mac into the investigation. Mac cannot see how the killing connects to Jilly's vanishing act. Fellow FBI agents Sherlock and Savich arrive to help, but the three investigators discover they cannot trust anyone in town. Someone wants them dead, and the attacks keep coming. Mac must find his sister before the pursuers find him. The search will expose a web of corruption that reaches deep into the community.
