The narrator, one of the Awakened, faces a crisis of historical memory. Their people's sacred past has been reduced to sterile textbook entries, forgotten after each lesson ends. The Awakened carry divine Avatars within themselves, binding them to history as both witnesses and creators. They cannot let their heritage become mere library books, checked out when convenient. The narrator takes on the demanding task of translating five ancient Testaments that tell the story of the First Cabal. Few among the Awakened have patience for the archaic language of these original documents. As the narrator works through these testimonies, adding observations and commentary, they wrestle with a terrible possibility. If the Awakened forget those who came before them and what they sacrificed and achieved, they risk becoming the final chapter in the last history book of their kind.
