The Hunting of the Snark

by Lewis Carroll

First published 1876

A crew of ten peculiar hunters sets sail in pursuit of the elusive Snark, armed with thimbles, forks, and unwavering hope. The Bellman leads this motley band through Carroll's nonsense landscape, where they threaten their quarry with railway shares and attempt to charm it using smiles and soap. Each hunter brings their own eccentric methods to the quest, but none can definitively say what exactly they seek. The expedition grows more absurd as they follow the Bellman's blank map and heed his cryptic warnings about the dreaded Boojum. Carroll weaves wordplay and logical impossibilities into their journey, creating a world where the rules of sense dissolve completely. The hunters press forward despite not knowing whether their target is beast, person, or pure imagination. Their relentless pursuit becomes both comedy and meditation on the nature of seeking itself, as they chase something that may not exist toward a destination they cannot name.
