Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass

by Lewis Carroll

First published 1865

Alice follows a White Rabbit down a hole and finds herself in Wonderland, where nothing behaves as it should. A baby transforms into a pig before her eyes. She joins a tea party where time has stopped working and the Mad Hatter serves endless afternoon tea. The Cheshire Cat appears and disappears at will, leaving only its grin behind. Alice grows and shrinks without warning, struggles through a chaotic croquet game with the Queen of Hearts, and faces a trial where the sentence comes before the verdict. In the Looking Glass world, she enters a backwards kingdom where she must run to stay in place and walk away from destinations to reach them. A chess game stretches across the landscape, moving Alice from pawn to queen. She meets Tweedledum and Tweedledee, Humpty Dumpty, and the Red and White Queens in a place where logic turns inside out. Through riddles, wordplay, and impossible conversations, Alice navigates worlds that mirror the confusion between childhood and growing up.
