The Narrow

by Kate Alice Marshall

First published 2023

Eden White remembers what happened six years ago at the Atwood School. She watched Delphine Fournier fall into the Narrow, the deceptively calm river behind campus that has claimed every other victim who entered its waters. Delphine survived, but something changed. Now she lives in complete isolation, unable to touch even a single drop of unfiltered water without risking death. When Eden can no longer afford tuition, she accepts a deal to serve as Delphine's live-in companion in exchange for covering her school expenses. The two girls begin sharing their buried secrets as Eden discovers what happened to Delphine's previous companion, who was discovered half-drowned on completely dry ground. Soon Eden wakes to wet footprints leading to her bed, hears rain against windows under clear skies, and glimpses a ghostly figure in her doorway. Whatever entity haunts Delphine has turned its attention to Eden.
