The Rats in the Walls

by H.P. Lovecraft

First published 1924

Walter de la Poer returns to Exham Priory in England, the ancient seat of his American family's ancestors, determined to restore it to its former state. The locals want nothing to do with the place. His cats grow restless the moment they arrive. Then the scratching begins, rising from somewhere deep below the foundations, a sound of countless small bodies moving through the dark. De la Poer descends through layers of excavated history, each level revealing a more disturbing picture of what his ancestors actually were. The deeper he goes, the more the line between investigator and inheritor begins to blur. Lovecraft builds the dread slowly, through accumulating detail rather than sudden shock, until the final revelation strips away every certainty de la Poer has about his own bloodline and his own mind. The story ends not with escape but with collapse, and the reader is left to decide how much of what happened was real and how much was something inherited from the walls themselves.
