Meg Langslow rises at dawn to feed her four-month-old twins when strange sounds draw her downstairs. Her living room has become a menagerie of cats, dogs, hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, guinea pigs, and one profanity-spouting macaw. The animals are refugees from a local shelter that abandoned its no-kill policy. Meg's zoologist grandfather helped orchestrate their theft and redistribution throughout town. The protest takes a deadly turn when a volunteer who transported the animals turns up murdered. Meg must determine whether the animal-rights activist died in a lover's quarrel or fell victim to something more dangerous. She faces twin challenges: solving a murder while managing an unwanted menagerie that threatens to derail her attempts at peaceful domesticity with her newborn babies.
