Herman Melville escapes from an American whaling ship and flees into the mountains of a Marquesan island. He fears he has stumbled into the territory of the dreaded Typee tribe, rumored to be cannibals who devour their enemies. Instead, the golden-limbed islanders welcome him with gentle laughter and generous hearts. They call him brother and share their abundant valley with him. Melville discovers these supposed savages live with graceful ease, free from the brutal morality of white civilization. The Marquesans treat him with more kindness than he ever knew aboard the whale ship or back in America. Yet Melville remains torn between two worlds. He has found the Eden he sought, a place where natural affection flows freely and moral restrictions fade away. But he cannot forget the civilization that shaped him, even as he grows to love his island brothers and their beautiful, lazy paradise.
