A Test of Courage

by Justina Ireland

First published 2021

Vernestra Rwoh has just become the youngest Jedi Knight in generations at sixteen, but her inaugural assignment feels more like childcare than heroism. She must escort twelve-year-old inventor Avon Starros aboard a luxury starship traveling to witness the grand opening of Starlight Beacon, a magnificent new space station. The routine journey turns deadly when explosions tear through their vessel. Vernestra barely saves herself and her young charge from being blown into the void of space. She escapes with Avon, the girl's droid J-6, a Padawan, and an ambassador's child in a small shuttle craft. Cut off from all communication and running low on provisions, they crash land on a desolate moon. The barren world provides basic shelter but little else they need to survive. Worse still, something dangerous stalks them through the alien wilderness, though they remain unaware of the threat. Vernestra must prove herself as both protector and leader while keeping her small group alive.
