A little girl stands by herself and begins to sing. Her voice rings out with "La la la," but silence answers her. She decides to venture beyond her starting place, carrying her song to the trees, then to a pond, then to the tall reeds that sway nearby. Still no voice joins hers. As daylight fades, she pushes further into the dark landscape, drawn toward the moon's glow. She climbs higher than before, singing with growing determination. Yet the world remains quiet. Exhausted and disappointed, she lies down and falls asleep on the earth. Then something wonderful happens. A sound reaches her ears and wakes her up. Someone has finally heard her song. Kate DiCamillo tells this story almost entirely through Jaime Kim's illustrations, using very few words to capture a child's deep need for connection and the joy that comes when loneliness finally ends.
