Part of Shifters Unbound
First published 2014
Cormac has spent months drifting between Shiftertowns, searching for a mate. Southern Nevada is his latest stop, and the first Shifter he meets is Nell, a bear with two young cubs and a shotgun leveled at his chest. She runs her corner of Shiftertown on her own terms, and no smooth-talking newcomer gets a warm welcome just because he has blue eyes and a easy grin. Cormac is patient. Nell is not. She wants him gone. He wants to stay. Then her sons land in danger, and Nell has no one else to call. Cormac steps in without being asked. He puts himself between her cubs and whatever is coming for them, and Nell has to reckon with the fact that this stranger she wanted to drive off is exactly the kind of Shifter she never let herself need. The story moves fast, keeps its focus on two stubborn people learning to trust each other, and earns its ending through action rather than declaration.
