Meg Langslow joins her grandfather on a cruise where he's scheduled to give lectures. The family vacation turns sour when the ship breaks down and needs repairs. A crew member announces that a woman has jumped overboard, leaving only her shoes, shawl, and a suicide note behind. The dead woman was part of a writers' group retreat on the ship, and her fellow writers disagree about whether suicide fits her personality. The captain refuses to investigate, planning to notify authorities once they reach port. Meg's father suspects foul play and decides the family should investigate while all the suspects remain trapped aboard. Meg must solve the case before the ship gets repaired and returns to shore.
