The Silmarillion

by J.R.R. Tolkien

Part of Middle Earth

First published 2004

Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, rules Middle-earth from his fortress of Angband. He has stolen the Silmarils, three jewels that hold the pure light of Valinor within them. The High Elves refuse to accept this theft. They cross the sea from the Undying Lands and make war against Morgoth's armies of orcs, dragons, and Balrogs. Elrond and Galadriel fight in these battles alongside the great Elven lords. The war spans centuries as the Elves establish kingdoms in Beleriand and face repeated defeats and victories. Heroes rise and fall while Morgoth's shadow grows longer across the world. These are the Elder Days that the characters in The Lord of the Rings remember as legend. The struggle centers on whether light or darkness will control Middle-earth's destiny.
