Part of In Death, book 32

First published 2011

Detective Peabody takes the lead on her first case as primary investigator, tracking down three punks who murdered an elderly store owner for thrills. After catching the killers, she decides to work out at Central's abandoned gym. Hidden in a shower stall, she accidentally overhears fellow officers Garnet and Oberman discussing drug deliveries, a house in the islands, and making someone named Keener look like an overdose victim. Peabody realizes she has stumbled onto corrupt cops who kill to protect their operation. She escapes undetected but faces a deadly dilemma. The evidence she needs to expose them puts her life at risk, since both officers have already committed murder to guard their secrets. Peabody must work with Eve Dallas and Roarke to gather proof against the dirty cops, knowing that her discovery makes her their next target.
