Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride

by Kate DiCamillo

First published 2009

Mercy Watson adores car rides with Mr. and Mrs. Watson. The portly pig always claims the driver's seat first, requiring coaxing and compliments before she moves to let the humans drive. She delights in feeling wind flutter her ears and sunshine warm her snout as their convertible cruises along. Their peaceful driving routine shatters when elderly neighbor Baby Lincoln suddenly appears in the backseat, seeking excitement and mischief. The surprise creates chaos that puts an eager Mercy back behind the wheel. A police officer gives chase as the runaway pig struggles with the brakes. Mercy soars through the air in a moment of pure joy. The adventure concludes with her favorite remedy for any situation: generous portions of buttered toast that make everything right again.
