Hermia refuses to marry Demetrius, the man her father has chosen for her. She flees Athens with her true love Lysander, heading for the forest where they can wed in secret. Demetrius pursues them, followed by Helena, who loves Demetrius despite his rejection. In the same woods, the fairy king Oberon quarrels with his queen Titania over a changeling boy. Oberon commands his servant Puck to use a love potion on Titania, but Puck's mischief extends to the four young lovers, creating chaos as the magic makes them fall for the wrong partners. Meanwhile, a group of amateur actors rehearses a play, and Puck transforms their leader Bottom into a donkey, whom the enchanted Titania immediately adores. As dawn approaches, the tangled web of misplaced affections must be sorted out before the lovers destroy themselves and each other.
